Authority Media began in 2010, when Darcy LaCouve and Derek Scott met in a coffee shop in Laos and decided to take a chance on a struggling little Android blog called Android Authority.
Their timing was good. Android was fast becoming the dominant mobile operating system on the planet, and Android Authority was there from the start — obsessively covering every development in a world that was reshaping itself by the week. First came the news. Then the reviews, the guides, the editorials, and a readership that kept coming back for more.
In 2011, we launched the Android Authority YouTube channel. It started with drop tests and took off fast, growing into a community of over 3 million subscribers.
2014 brought SoundGuys, built for audiophiles and defined by one thing above all — rigorous, measurement-driven evaluation that still sets the standard today. It's the same instinct that runs through everything we publish: we buy the products, test them in the lab and in real life, and tell readers what we actually found. That hands-on rigor — carried from our testing benches to the show floors at CES and MWC — is what separates a recommendation you can trust from one you can't.
In 2018, we opened our offices in Vancouver, Canada — the nerve center for a team of 50+ expert creators now spread across four continents. That same year, the portfolio grew to make room for distinct voices: Gary Explains launched as the channel of Gary Sims, a former engineer and Linux developer who turned deep technical explainers into must-watch viewing. And C. Scott Brown, who joined Android Authority as a news writer, went on seven years later to launch his own channel devoted to the Pixel ecosystem — hosting every video and operating with full editorial independence.
Over the years, our team made Android Authority the premier destination for three kinds of people: mobile enthusiasts, in-market shoppers who want buying advice they can actually trust, and everyday readers looking to get more out of the technology in their lives. As the 2020s arrived, our coverage expanded alongside technology itself, reaching into every corner of daily life: wearables, smart home, audio, entertainment, and far beyond.
Today, our brands reach more than 30 million people every month, and our community numbers close to 8 million followers across channels. Across every one of them, Authority Media has chased the same goal: people who trust us, and keep coming back because that trust is never taken for granted.
